The Vermont Clean Fuel Standard (S.171) was introduced on January 6, 2026. As proposed, the program would require the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation to implement regulations to reduce GHG emissions per unit of fuel energy by 10% below 2018 levels by 2030, or by a later date if the Commissioner determined that an extension was appropriate to implement the program.
A previous version of the Clean Fuel Standard bill (S.24) was introduced into the state senate on January 19, 2023 and was referred to the Committee on Natural Resources and Energy. No further action was taken on the bill before the end of the 2023-2024 session.
